I think there are some times when disassociation would be appropriate, especially if someone was abusing you physically or verbally. I don't think diassociation is the same as being a militant. Militants aim to 'convert' negative people, whereas disassociation is just moving away from something that does you no good. But it might be considered an extreme approach, yes.
