Do Negative Souls Exist?
During my Soul Realignment training (and from several other sources), I was taught that on a soul-level, souls are either positive or negative in their orientation. (Spiritual healers need to make this distinction because positive souls seek healing and negative souls do not.)
What a positive soul looks like
If you’re a positive soul, on a soul-level, you choose to receive your vital life force from God/Creator/Source (choose your favourite term). You thrive on energies such as peace, love and joy. You seek empowering and fulfilling relationships which allow you to express and enjoy these energies with others. Your life purpose will be to bring some class of good-feeling energy into the Earth plane through your endeavours.
Positive energies nurture your mind, keep your body healthy and soothe your spirit. You feel a connection and oneness with other souls and you know deep down in your soul blueprint that you are part of a bigger whole.
What a negative soul looks like
If you’re a negative soul, at some point you have decided that you no longer want to receive vital life force from the Creator – you’d rather go it alone. You’re holding yourself apart from energies such as Love, oneness, compassion, Light, Abundance because you can no longer receive them. And you no longer feel part of the whole body of spirit.
Negative souls are a bit like the person who bites his nose off to spite his face. In refusing to align themselves with Source energy, they have effectively made a vow of separation from God or from Source and that means that they no longer get vital life force from Source or from anywhere that’s considered kosher by positive souls. It seems the only other way to get energy is to steal it second-hand from other souls who’ve drawn it directly from Source.
How do negative souls steal energy from other people? Negative souls are like tricksters. They take positive energy in positive souls, convince them that there is an absence of love/source energy and then when the positive soul buys into this and rejects this energy as lacking in positivity, the negative soul happily takes it from you. In the physical, this looks like using control, fear, manipulation, domination to inspire others to buy into the existence of these energies. And of course, once these negative energies are perceived by the positive soul, they cannot be contained in your energy body with any level of comfort and so the negative soul, like a parasite, draws this energy off to be consumed and to sustain their existence.
For the positive soul, this is a drain on their energy.
The Either-or view of negative energy
BUT – how do you feel about this either-or distinction between positive and negative souls? Are we either positive or negative? Is anyone 100% evil or 100% good? This either-or distinction has personally never felt right to me. And sure enough, my guides recently informed me that no-one is 100% negative or positive, ALL THE TIME.
My guides tell me that there are a few ways and degrees with which to work with negative energy. There are four types of person:
(1) Hardcore darkworkers
These are people who choose to work predominantly with negative energy for this lifetime and have been working with negativity for many lifetimes. These people are very invested in their negative stance. They are so invested and mired in negativity that they often become really powerful darkworkers and create a lot of fear, pain and disruption in their lives. If a hardcore darkworker is fairly intelligent, they’ll tend to be underhand in the negativity they create. They do this in order to come in under the radar. They may subtly introduce limiting beliefs into other peoples experiences. They may use very subtle and insidious ways to induce a feeling of limitation or entrapment in people. These souls do not usually return to the light side in their lifetime (although it does occasionally happen) because their path has been so closely entwined with the dark and to backtrack would mean some complicated and bothersome unravelling.
In my Akashic Record readings, the first thing I do when someone brings a family member in for a reading is to find out what type of energy the soul tends to work with. If the client’s loved one is working to a large extent with negative energy, as the example above, when I tell the client what energy their loved one works with, it’s usually not a surprise, because they’re usually what we’d call a nasty piece of work in the physical.
(2) ‘Extreme’ negative/positive souls
These are the people who are very invested in negative energy, but also work with some positive energies. BUT they are too oriented towards the dark side to want to heal their degree of separation from Source. Sometimes the Akashic Record cannot decide whether these souls are oriented towards the positive or negative. They seem to be a bit “bi-polar” in this respect and their orientation shifts sometimes – at times they’ll be working with some positive energies and at other times they’ll work with negative energies. At other times they’ll be distorting truth to distract you so that you find it hard to see what kind of energies they work with. It appears that these types of souls are only positive or negative in the moment. Beware walking your path with these souls beside you, as they often create disruption, turmoil and chaos in their extreme approach to life. These souls usually do not accept healing because they’re too invested in the extremes they’re experiencing to want to let go of it.
(3) ‘Wounded’ People
Then there are the people who are working mostly with positive energies, but who feel ‘damaged’ on a soul-level, so they are vulnerable and periodically they are assailed by and work strongly with negativity. They may fall into frequent depressions, they may experience strong fluctuations, but they’re not usually sufficiently invested in the negative to reject healing and a return to greater positive energy. Included in this category are psychopaths.
(4) The rest of us
Then there are those of us who choose negative energy to varying degrees in our experiences mostly just in order to gain the benefit of the contrast. But we never really work with negative energies to a large extent on any long-term basis.
However, sometimes positive souls work with negative energy strongly for a period of time. Most positive souls go through a time like this, in order to learn something significant from the contrast.
I now consider myself a polarized lightworker, but I remember doing some pretty nasty things when I was younger.
Even if you have a positive orientation, I’m sure you can think of similar times in your own life. For example, when you’ve wanted to hurt someone really badly and take revenge because you were so angry with them. If so, at those times you were working partly with dark energy.
So you can see that our orientation of negative or positive is like a place on a spectrum. Our place on the spectrum/scale shifts in our lifetime according to what we need to experience. At times, some of us are almost like saints and a few people veer towards the other extreme and do some unimaginably awful things. Most of us are somewhere in between at different times. But where do we draw the line between ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ souls in the light of this? The answer to that is that we can’t, unless we’re willing to draw an arbitrary line.
Moving out of the Middle Ages in our view of negative energy
In order to deal with negative energy intelligently and consciously, we need to bash through some untruths about it. There are two very common ways of perceiving negative energy in or society, neither of which serve us:
Denial
People who are in denial about negative energy believe that everyone is positive. Everyone is good. There is no negative energy.
These people sometimes deny that negativity exists OR sometimes they politely and fearfully skirt around negativity. At the root of these people’s experiences of negative energy is fear. They are afraid that it may exist in their reality, buy into the horror of it and cannot face the horror of it, so they avoid it and bury their heads in the sand.
I recently saw an example of this, when I did a reading for a woman who wanted me to check up on the soul status of her daughter. She wanted me to find out whether her daughter was seeking healing or not. According to her Akashic Record, the girl was not seeking healing and was at the time working strongly with a negative orientation. When I told this woman my findings, she was very distressed and upset and maintained that there are no negative souls; that negativity does not exist.
The Militant
Secondly, there is the militant. The militant wants to fight negativity and negative souls, and aims to create an Utopian Earth where only positive energy reigns and exists. They label souls as either 100% positive or 100% negative (saints or sinners) and they want to eliminate or ‘convert’ the ’sinners’.
I encountered a ‘militant’ last summer when I was training with an intuitive healer. His very black and white view of positive and negative energy was quite attractive at first, as my mind for a while liked that simplistic system of looking at the world. But soon after I began training with him, this man told me that one of my family members was a ‘black magician’ – i.e. a negative soul. He suggested disassociation from this family member as a way of solving this and seemed very distressed for me. It was true that this family member seemed to be exhibiting controlling and manipulative behaviour at that time, but I did not feel disassociation was the right way to deal with it. In the end, my reaction was to disassociate myself from him because I felt he was fear-mongering.
Militants focus on negativity a lot, so they unwittingly create more of it in their environment for two reasons:
- What you focus on expands
- What you resist, persists
At the bottom of the militant’s drive to eliminate negative energy is a fear of it. While there is fear of negativity, you are buying into negativity and it persists in your world. So they are trapped in a vicious, unpleasant circle.
But why does negativity exist if we’re not meant to be eliminating it?
We are meant to experience negativity from time to time, just as we’re meant to experience the yin and the yang; hot and cold, light and dark, pleasure and pain.
And the reason why we want to experience negative energy as well as positive energy in our world is that it provides a contrast. And contrast is a very useful part of our experience here.
I’ll explain:
We are incarnated here to learn to manifest our spiritual gifts and riches into the physical, through our thoughts and intentions. This is how we evolve.
On a soul-level, we are willing to have the experience of negative energy because it propels us even more towards the positive; to the manifestation of that which feels good; that which we are. We bless the pain because it points the way towards joy. We bless the fear because it points the way towards love. And in this we evolve and grow in spiritual power. That is our whole purpose here.
We did not incarnate here because we want to experience only joy and love 24/7. If we wanted that, we’d never incarnate in the first place. We experience pain to know what joy feels like. We experience fear in order to know what love feels like:
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet.
Only when we cease requiring such extreme contrasts to grow will we eliminate such extreme negative energy in our world.
So, with this in mind, it serves us to embrace the cycles of life which occur. And they don’t happen to us – we are in control of how much negativity we experience at any time as a direct consequence of our orientation.
Moving towards a greater level of positive energy
However, I am not espousing an apathetic acceptance of negative energy in our lives because we have every reason to want to pursue a path of greater positivity.
Firstly, if you choose a path of positive energy, you can reach greater success and self-actualization when you eliminate a large level of negative energy from your life. Steve Pavlina, in his article ‘Are You a Lightworker or a Darkworker’ states that you are much more likely to be successful in this world as either a polarized lightworker (someone who is committed to a positive path) or a polarized darkworker (a soul who is committed to a negative path). In terms of energy, the assertion that a polarized lightworker = more power, does makes a lot of sense. The less you allow negativity to drain energy from you, the more power you have available to you, energetically and in life.
So, if you’re someone who works with positive energies, to reach a certain level of success in this world, you will progressively eliminate most negative influences from your life. You will of course always experience the peaks and troughs (sometimes via a small dose of self-sabotage), so that you can know some contrast, but anything external which is really disruptive is usually eliminated from your life. And sometimes, elimination of negativity is not a linear process.
How to eliminate negativity from your life
You can eliminate negativity in several ways:
- By not wasting your time being a militant or a denier. Accept that negative energy exists and make a conscious choice to recognize it and move away from it, if you wish, when you encounter it in your environment.
- Healing: any negative energy which is buried inside you (i.e. in your pain body) needs to be healed to diminish future disruption and self-sabotage. You can choose many different ways of doing this: You can choose EFT, The Work, soul realignment, TAT, hypnotherapy, angelic healing, to name a few.
- By no longer buying into the negativity of others. If you’re surrounded by negative people, eventually you need to limit the contact you have with these people or learn to become immune to them. You can either do this by disassociating with them (the most extreme path) or by learning to discard the negativity they espouse and bringing some truth into your interactions with them. Once you show them that you no longer buy into their negativity, their control, manipulation or fear, they soon decide that you’re not a worthwhile source of second-hand energy and seek energy elsewhere.

Isnt’ this the same as the militant approach? Why not enjoy the negativity until you feel like you’ve outgrown it?
Interesting piece this one. Thanks. I’ve always wondered if I’m on the light or dark side. I know I’ve been on both, but this clarifies things a lot.
Excellent article. Thanks!:)
Excellent article Anna! I like how you divided the different types of souls that exist – this brought a lot of clarity to me. Also, I like how you mentioned how to alleviate and remove negative souls in our lives. Thanks very much!
hi Anna
I had a feeling the other day that you posted a new blog and to my surprise I was right! maybe I’m becoming psychic. I really enjoyed this blog specially from our reading earlier this month, it helps explain more what a soul with a negative orientation is. I’m still working on developing a closer relationship with my guides and guardian angel. Thanks again!
Thanks Anna! Your communication is soothing to the soul! : ) p
Hi Mahreen! I think there are some times when disassociation would be appropriate, especially if someone was abusing you physically or verbally. I don’t think diassociation is the same as being a militant. Militants aim to ‘convert’ negative people, whereas disassociation is just moving away from something that does you no good. But it might be considered an extreme approach, yes.
Fiona, Agata & Patricia – thanks for your comments, glad this was helpful!
Maria – glad you found this helpful too – I did want to clarify this negative soul business for previous clients, that was partly my motivation in writing it.
I can always see the good spark in others, which gives me me ability to see also the good in others, no matter how bad they are.
Only lately I discovered that it is too difficult task to change others and I can only change myself to the better, becoming stronger and more confident, which will then be a better example for others, if I am doing well
Hi Anna,
what about Independent Negative Energies (INEs)? I recently heard this term – when someone had an INE removed from their body in a healing session. Can you help me understand these better?
Thanks!
Hi Chika t – I get asked about independent negative energies/entities a lot, so I’m going to do a blog post on that in the future, so stay tuned!
